Let’s talk about what it takes to get fit – Alcohol consumption
It’s the holidays. Excess food is everywhere. Most of you have a plan for that. However, food is not the only thing you should be concerned about. There is a bigger elephant in the room and that is alcohol. Drinks cannot tank your weight loss goals just a quick as over eating can.
I know when I was going through the process of losing weight that I could not drink. I chose to stop drinking while I was in the process of losing weight because I felt lethargic the day after a few drinks. To navigate the social landmines I came up with a few party drinks. My favorite was seltzer with a spritz of lime and a cherry on top or seltzer with a splash of cranberry with a lime on top. I put it in a fancy glass so it looked like I was drinking. Only those really close to me knew I was not drinking alcohol. I would ask the bartender to put it in fancy glass if I was out with friends. Bartenders will do most drink order the way you wish to get a good tip.
Now I drink again but with moderation. Two glasses of wine is usually my limit. One mixed drink is my usual limit if I chose to drink at all. After I hit my limit, I go back to one of my signature party drinks.
Alcohol is pure carbohydrates. Alcohol has calories. An 8 ounce mojito has 242 calories and 25 grams of sugar. Is this how you want to expend your caloric intake for the day? Alcohol also lowers your inhibitions so you are more likely to make poor food choices. You may start with the veggie platter but after a few drinks you have moved on to queso and chips.
Here are a few tips:
- What is your favorite low calorie drink that you can take to a party? Remember, you must be responsible for you. Don’t expect your host to have something you can drink beyond water.
- Make a drink ahead. Better carry your own special party glass with you. Make it festive.
- Know your limits if you are going to drink. Is two your limit? Three? Know it and stick to it.
Have a wonderful Christmas!
